Does your home frequently suffer from clogged pipes? If so, hydro jetting might be the perfect solution to the problem. In addition to removing the obstruction, hydro jetting is a form of drain cleaning and will effectively clear away buildup within the pipes which can lead to further blockage if left untreated.

High Pressure Hydro Jetting Solutions

What is Drain and Sewer Hydro Jetting?

Professional plumbers carry out hydro jetting to clean clogged drains and sewer lines. The hydro jetting machine uses 35,000 psi to blow away the blockage and loosen the buildup from the pipe’s interior.

How Does Hydro Jetting Work?

Most hydro jetting services will first perform a video inspection to figure out the cause of the pipe’s blockage. A video inspection also helps ensure that sewage does not inadvertently back up into other areas of the home such as the tub, shower, or sinks. If they see that tree roots have infiltrated the plumbing, then the hydro jetting draining cleaning process should prove successful to cut through the roots. However, if the roots are heavy or thick then the plumber might need to break through the root mass with a snake before hydro jetting to solve the problem.

Hydro jetting is not a complete solution for all problems. If you have a broken pipe, then the process will not work. Also, the sheer force of the jetting water can even weaken an aging pipe and cause a break.

The Process of Hydro Jetting

You should only have experienced plumbers, such as Conejo Valley Home Services Plumbing & Rooter, perform hydro jetting on your drain pipes. You want to have your pipes assessed by a professional before having them jetted to ensure they are structurally sound and can withstand the force of the water.

With hydro jetting, a nozzle is pushed through the drain down into the pipe. It is propelled through the pipe by the water’s pressure. Nozzle size does vary depending on the size of the drain, the application, and what is causing the clog. When the nozzle runs into the obstruction, whether it’s food, grease, paper, fabric, or some other clog, then high-pressure jets of water tear through the material so it starts to dissolve.

The PSI force of the hydro jets does vary depending on the system being used but typically it is upwards of 4,000 PSI with a flow rate of 18 GPM. The force of the water can clean out pipes that measure from 1.5 to 18 inches in diameter and a length of 700 feet long.

What Can be Removed with Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting will remove scale build-up from hard water, sand, silt, grease, food particles, scale, sludge, and slime. The water also has the force needed to cut through roots or paper clogs.

What Does Hydro Jetting Cost?

Depending on where you live, hydro jetting can cost from $900 to $2,500 depending on application (Note:  A access cleanout is required for this service). However, if you have a sewer drain clog then it can easily cost $1,000 or more to effectively clear out the drain of the obstruction.

When Do You Need Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting is the preferred method of cleaning a drain if the drain is structurally sound. It can effectively clear out a clog quicker and with greater efficiency than old-fashioned snaking.

I’m really glad I happened to find Conejo Services. It’s been one of those crazy months where EVERYTHING keeps breaking or falling apart. We’ve had multiple plumbing issues in the past two weeks; and both times Conejo sent James as our plumber. James is honest, kind, thorough, and goes above and beyond to take good care of homeowners. Beyond James’s professionalism, Conejo has impressed us with their communication style. They text confirmations promptly and also send a photo of the service technician will be, so you are 💯 confident who is knocking on your door is who they say they are. Seriously relieved to find such a trustworthy company—which is rare these days.

James and Miguel came out today to replace our backyard faucet. They arrived earlier in their allotted time window and went straight into their assessment. Took all of 3 minutes for that. After signing the authorization, I had to answer a quick work phone call. By the time I was done with my call, they were done with the job. Both James and Miguel were awesome, super friendly and professional. We would like to have them personally come out and handle our next plumbing job in the future. I highly recommend these guys to get the job done! Conejo Services is a great company to work with. They also installed our water heater and central heating unit a few years ago. They took care of EVERYTHING, to include inspections, asbestos abatement, city permits, ALL of it. They are definitely the one stop shop for heating/cooling, water heaters, plumbing, and probably more. Very trustworthy.
Ronnie was very nice. Work was to fix a plumbing leak. He explained me what he was going to do and he cleaned up after his work. Mentioned when I should turn the water back ON and what to expect. I am happy with his service.

I luckily found Conejo Plumbing on Yelp to service our tankless hot water heater, after my original plumber reneged on my lifetime contract. The plumber “Dier” was early for our appointment and after pleasantries was eager to solve the intermittent ignition issues we were experiencing. After an inspection it was noted that the igniter and flame rods had carbon and rust built up. Instead of soaking a customer and replacing our unit a simple service call got us back up and running. I can’t thank Conejo and “Dier” for the prompt service call and their professionalism. Suffice it to say Conejo will be my first call for plumbing issues and I look forward to seeing them in the future for HVAC calls as well. If you’re in need of a professional plumber I highly recommend Conejo as your first choice.

Outstanding professional service with honest reasonable quotes - review based on both plumbing and HVAC based services. James, the expert assessor, not only did a thorough analysis of the issue, but also took the trouble to explain the scope of work. The work was scheduled for the very next day. The scheduling staff is also polite and helpful(Nancy, Anna). The HVAC technician, William, troubleshooted and got our AC unit running, again quality work at a very reasonable price.

William was the best technician we have ever had!! Both on a personal and professional level. We had issues he explained perfectly and fixed them quickly. It was not cheap but we trusted what he said and it all made sense. He was very helpful with an additional airflow issue unrelated to our HVAC units. Awesome experience. Thanks

Benefits of Hydro Jetting

Hydro jetting plumbing has revolutionized drain cleaning.

The benefits of hydro jetting include:

  • Safe: Having a home re-plumbed is an expensive process so you want to ensure that whatever drain cleaning method you use does not harm your pipes. Hydro jetting clears away the debris and does not typically damage modern plumbing systems. The process can actually help ensure that your drains continue draining. In addition, hydro drain cleaning can increase the lifespan of your pipes and ensure that your home’s plumbing system functions more efficiently.
  • Eco-friendly (no harsh chemicals): Store-bought drain cleaners might clear away paper or hair clogs in your drains, but the chemicals are caustic and can eventually eat away at your pipes. With continued use, people can sustain damage from the chemicals. Luckily, hydro jetting is 100 percent chemical-free.
  • Quick: A plumber can typically clear a clog in less than an hour using hydro jetting. You will not have to cope with any downtime.
  • Long-lasting Results: Helps prevent future clogs by removing debris buildup.
  • Effective: Hydro jetting is far more effective than snaking and renders long-term results, so you do not have to worry about having a plumber return to your home to unclog the drain in the near future.

Hydro Jetting vs. Snaking: Which Draining Cleaning Process is Best?

Snaking a drain is a drain cleaning process that has been used for centuries to remove obstructions from plumbing. However, snaking does not always remove the complete obstruction which will lead to further problems at a later date. Snaking might seem initially cheaper but if the problem is not solved then the plumber will have to return at a later date, and you will incur additional fees to again unclog the pipe.

Risks of Hydro Jetting

In some cases, older plumbing cannot withstand the force of hydro jetting, so snaking is your only option. However, if your home has modern pipes then there should be no problem with using hydro to effectively clean the pipes instead of snaking.

History of Hydro Jetting

Many people mistakenly believe that hydro jetting is a new invention, but it has actually been around since the 1930s. In the mid-1800s, engineers started to use high-pressure water for mining erosion projects which spurred the development of harnessing narrow jets of water in the 1930s which were then used effectively for cutting.

A Wisconsin paper company developed a machine that had the capability of diagonally moving low-pressure water jets to cut through sheets of paper. When the 1950s arrived, a Luxembourg engineer developed a high-pressure water jet that could cut plastic. Aviation engineers took things a step further by developing a 100,000-psi pump. Throughout the 1960s and 1950s,  refinements would take place which would lead to a nozzle head to direct the water jet even more precisely.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, other individuals would make additional refinements, most of which involved the nozzle head which was further customized to work with the waterjet. Newer machines were able to cut through a variety of materials including stone, glass and wood and do so with increasing precision. Nowadays, the water jet has been honed to perfection and can safely be used to clean out pipes by skilled plumbers.

FAQs: Hydro Jetting

Below are a few frequently asked questions concerning hydro jetting.

Hydro jetting is extremely beneficial to homeowners and for commercial plumbing. You will avoid needing to have your drain regularly snaked which ultimately saves you money. The hydro removes drain debris and can improve the function of older plumbing. When used correctly, hydro jetting has the ability to improve the function of old plumbing lines by removing silt and sand that chemical cleaners and augers fail at flushing.
The hydro jet is inserted into the sewer line via the cleanout. The plumber then uses the hydro jet to spray a powerful stream of water that relies on gravity to push the debris or clog in a downstream motion to clear the drain’s pathway.

When your jet is clogged, your first line of defense is to call a professional plumber who you can trust. Some plumbers might use a snake first and then try hydro jetting, but others will use hydro as their go-to solution. However, if the plumber suspects roots are the culprit, then they might opt for the hydro jet to effectively cut through the clog. Most professional plumbers consider hydro jetting the most effective option for cleaning out a clogged drain.

Yes, hydro jetting is an effective solution to cleaning out drains and maintaining them by effectively removing build-up and scale, especially in areas with hard water.

Hydro jetting is typically considered safe, especially for homes that have plastic drains that are sturdy and can withstand the pressure of the water’s blast. Cast iron pipes often develop a significant amount of corrosion and hydro jetting can actually cause more problems with such pipes. However, modern pipes can easily handle hydro jetting and even benefit from it as a regular maintenance option to clear away debris.

Many homeowners worry that the water will cut through plastic pipes, but the jetted water will not cut through the pimples and will instead cleanse them effectively.
