How Much Does a Plumbing Repair Cost?

Many issues can arise with your home’s plumbing as time goes by, from dripping faucets to clogged drains. When plumbing problems occur, it’s vital to get professional repairs as soon as possible. Keeping your home safe and dry by repairing your plumbing system as soon as you see signs of a leak or damage can save you the time and money in the long run.

But plumbing repairs can be complicated and confusing. There are many things you should consider – cost being one of them. Several factors influence how much plumbing repairs cost, like the size and type of repair, location, the time needed, etc. This article will guide you through the factors determining how much you will pay for a plumbing repair.

How Much Does a Plumbing Repair Cost? What You Should Expect to Pay

Cost of Hiring a Plumber

When you want to hire a plumber to complete any repair project, you should be aware of some basic labor costs.

Most professional plumbers charge an hourly rate of $45 to $200 per hour with a minimum service call-out fee of $50 to $100. This can quickly add up if you’re hiring a plumber for a large job, like a whole house pipe replacement. You can expect to pay upward of $100 per hour for complex repair jobs.

How Much Does a Plumber Cost? Here’s a Plumbing Repair Cost Guide

While plumbing repairs cost around $330 on average, it all comes down to the individual job. Here’s what you can expect to pay when you hire a plumber for common plumbing repairs:

» Clogged Drains

Though plumbers will have varying labor rates and fees, a drain clog is often a fixed-price service, with an average price of $150.

» Backups

On average, you can expect to pay between $350 and $1,000 to clear out larger backups involving multiple drains and your main house sewer pipe. The cost varies according to several factors, such as the severity of the issue and the cleaning method used.

» Leaks

The total cost to fix a leaking pipe varies greatly depending on the leak’s location, how easy it is to access, and how severe it is. Simple p-trap repairs can cost as low as $100, while the average price to repair a pipe in the wall behind your kitchen cabinets can be as high as $500.

» Faucet Repair or Replacement

The national average cost to repair a leaky faucet is about $100 to $150. If the fixture has deteriorated too far, the average cost to install new plumbing fixtures can range from as low as $150 to $500, depending on the fixture’s brand and style.

» Plumbing Appliance Repair

On average, you can expect to pay a plumber between $150 and $400 to repair or install plumbing appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.

» Toilet Repair or Replacement

Homeowners pay an average of $200 to fix a broken toilet, with project costs typically ranging between $85 and $360. Sometimes, a plumber might charge a flat rate for a project.

Replacing a toilet will set you back between $224 to $532. The cost includes removing the old toilet and installing a new one.

» Sump Pump Repair or Replacement

The national cost for sump pump repairs lies between $150 to $500, with most homeowners paying an average of $300 to fix a leaking sump pump.

You can expect to pay about $500 for sump pump replacement, while a new installation costs an average of $1,200.

» Water Heater Repair or Replacement

The average cost to repair a water heater is approximately $500, while the typical range for water heater replacement is between $1300 to $5500, averaging around $1700.

» Water Softening System Repair

It typically costs between $150 and $1000 to repair a water softener, but the cost can reach as high as $2,000 or more.

» Sewer Repair

Trenchless sewer pipe repairs range, on average, $0-250 per foot, while dig and replace repairs cost $50-250 per foot.

» Trenchless Sewer Replacement

While the average cost of a sewer line replacement is about $3,500, it can range from $1,000 to $20,000, depending on your situation.

» Pipe Replacement

If you have a small leak or only need to replace a portion of your piping, you may pay as little as $360 for repairs. However, repiping your home in its entirety could cost up to $7,000, depending on the house. Here are several signs you need a plumber for pipe replacement:

  • Discolored water
  • Clogs or leaks
  • Bad water pressure
  • Weird tasting tap water
  • Visible mold

» Well Pump Repair

Has your well pump stopped working? It’ll cost you about $1,000 to get it repaired by a professional plumber, assuming no digging is required

Types of Plumbing Repair Cost – Breakdown

Here are the various types of plumbing repair costs you can expect to pay when you call a professional :

» Plumber

More reputable plumbers may also charge higher rates because of how strong their reputation is. An experienced professional should be able to give you a reasonably accurate estimate for the hours they’ll need before starting.

» Supplies and Materials Needed

While the labor involved with plumbing projects often makes up most of the costs associated with a repair, the costs can also increase substantially if lots of materials are needed to complete the project.

» Repair Permits

When calculating your plumbing repair costs, you have to include the potential price of work permits. Experienced and licensed plumbing contractors know if you need to pay anything based on your home’s location.

We recommend you seek estimates from several companies to better understand the costs involved so you don’t spend more than you should.

Cost Factors to Consider Regarding the Plumbing Repair

Besides the plumber’s experience, repair permits, and cost of supplies and materials, several additional factors play a part in what you’ll pay for a plumber.

The average hourly rate for a plumber will vary from $45 to $200, depending on these factors:

» Job Complexity

Generally speaking, the more complex the task, the more you can expect to pay. Plumbers take longer to complete more complicated tasks, which also require a higher level of expertise. Fixing a leaky faucet, for instance, will be much cheaper than complex tasks such as installing a new water heater.

» Timing

Like most industries, the cost of plumbing services also varies depending on the time of year. During the winter, for instance, plumbers may charge more for their services because they have more work to do and can’t afford to take on too many jobs at the same time.

» Location

Your plumber may also charge more if they travel a long distance to your home. Therefore, we recommend searching for a plumber who operates in your local area. Simply search “plumbing repair near me” on Google, and the search engine will suggest a list of reliable, fast-response plumbers.

» The Time it Takes to Complete the Job

The length of time it takes to complete plumbing repairs will also affect the final cost. Generally, the longer it takes to complete a job, the more the plumbing repair costs.

» Emergency vs. Non-Emergency

Emergency plumbing repair costs tend to be higher than non-emergency services. This is because plumbing technicians must put in extra time and effort to address urgent situations, even if it means working overtime.

What Should You Look For In A Plumbing Repair Specialist?

Are you considering hiring a professional to solve a plumbing problem? We have the right questions that you need to ask the plumber before you do!

» Experience

The most important thing to look for in a plumbing repair specialist is experience. Plumbers aren’t all equal, and you’re better off hiring a plumber with many years of training and experience.

Besides getting a reliable service that won’t need further repair in a few weeks, experienced local plumbers also understand the building codes in your area.

» Are They Transparent About Their Rates?

We highly recommend choosing a plumbing company that can provide a comprehensive estimate upfront.

» Customer Satisfaction

It’s also best to choose a leak repair specialist who guarantees satisfaction. Many licensed plumbing companies offer warranties on their work. If something goes wrong with the repair, they can fix it for you at no additional cost.

» 24-Hour Emergency Service

When choosing your plumber, you must know if they offer round-the-clock service. If a pipe bursts in your home or your water heater fails, you need the assurance that your plumber provides a 24-hour emergency call-out service.

Kevin was really great! He tried to fix my existing garbage disposal, but unfortunately it was too far gone. The prices that were quoted were more than I cared to spend. However, he was very understanding, professional, and courteous. Had the prices been reasonably close I wouldn’t have hesitated to have him do the work. He well represented your company.

After recent rains, the lighting in our back yard stopped working. The GFCI would not reset. Omar did a great job. He gathered all the information he could and discussed the procedure he would use to trouble shoot and fix the issue and we discussed options and recommendations. He then followed the plan we agreed upon. He also recommended a whole house surge suppressor to bring the main panel up to current code. He did not use a high pressure sell on the suppressor and was fine with not installing one. We did decide to go ahead and get one installed. He was knowledgeable and friendly and was willing to discuss and explain what ever we asked about.

I have had both HVAC and Electricians to our home to give estimates. All were professional with great communication skills and knowledge.

Dan came to fix our heating filament and install an iWave. Like everyone I have interacted with he was informative and easy to work with.
I am Very satisfied with the responsiveness and prefissionalism.

I can't say enough good things about Conejo Services. We called them to get a second opinion on a major plumbing issue. Jimmy came out and put a camera though the various lines involved and gave us his opinion, taking the time to explain the issues and the pros and cons of the options we had. He was professional, courteous, and a straight shooter. It's so hard to know what questions to ask when you are trying to care for your home, and Jimmy really made me feel like he wanted to help us make the best choice. While the repair was not cheap, I feel that it was fairly priced. At the end of the day, I am certain he saved us money and a great deal of stress: he put my mind at ease. And when you are trying to make the best decision about your biggest asset, that is truly priceless. After we came up with a game plan, he gave us a detailed quote that clearly stated the scope of work and didn't blink at guaranteeing it for 25 YEARS. Christa at the office called and scheduled our work and was super friendly. The crew was beyond courteous and conscientious and worked their butts off. The actual plumbing work was top notch. In addition, they had to dig up a portion of the yard where there were plants, and they did a very careful job of making sure the plants weren't harmed and put them back perfectly. We are so happy with the whole experience and highly recommend them. Will use them again in a heartbeat!

Great technicians! Though IMO overpriced. I joined the Platinum Level Preferred Maintenance Club, to save on dispatching on routine items and get great deals on maintenance routines on HVAC, tankless water heater, water and plumbing. Needed a 30 year old wall shower faucet replaced when I signed up, the job was well done, but the cost was exoberant, imo, and I did not recieve a discount on the repair as I missed the fine print and was not told that when I signed, I needed to be a club member for a consectutive 5 months to obtain those repair discounts. I did ask at least twice to get a call to manager, was told the message was forwarded to the office, no response. Now 5 months later had a Heater Maintenance and Dryer Vent cleaning, Eric was the specialist. Excellent service by Eric. However, I received an invoice that day for $200 for the vent cleaning even though that service is listed as part of the PMC at Platinum level. I called CSHPE customer service and was told they would handle it and to ignore the invoice. Three days later, I got the same invoice, again I called, same advice. Got another invoice yesterday. I have not received one today, but it is still early AM. 🤨 Bottom line, good technical work but undermined by pricing perception, membership benefit confusion/misapplication, and unresolved billing/communication problems.

George was awesome! He called and let us know he could come sooner but, made sure that was okay with our schedule. He went above and beyond explaining the issue and made sure all was okay to make sure that issue did occur again. He asked if we were okay with the explanation and if we had any other questions or issues to reach out. Excellent service!

Owen was my electric tech,
and from the conversation over a couple of electrical issues here, I understood quickly that Owen knows the line of work very well: educated, smart, polite, with down the the earth professional demineur... He checked the wiring, and explained the possibilities why my appliance keeps tripping the breaker..
Thank you Owen.
The company has a right set up. They would also remind you about the appointment, and would convinietly call you a few minutes ahead.

They have the right codes... they won't walk in their shoes on your floors either...
I strongly recommend the Conejo company for your electrical issues...

When our 31 year-old furnace suddenly stopped working, they were out within 24 hours of my call. It was a quick and easy replacement part, but something we wouldn’t dare do ourselves. It’s good to know we’ve found a reliable repair service!

This company really stands behind its work. I have the platinum maintenance for my both HVAC and plumbing, both installed by them and it really pays off. The plumbing area, especially, led by Andrew Dilger and team are honest, thorough, skilled and offer options from minimal to full overhaul with pro’s and cons and short vs. long-term financial differentials of each approach. I have an older home with pipes at end of their 60 year shelf-life and it’s a new area for me. It’s really great to be able to trust a company when the product isn’t visible, but buried in the ground. I liked Derek who identified a potential issue during normal maintenance and the oversight of Andrew confirming it and best approach. I think it’s the honest approach set by senior management, including Andrew, Ralph and others. And highly professional! Kudos!
