Unclog a Bathroom Sink

Generally, bathroom sinks are super easy to clean and maintain. All you need to do is ensure that nothing besides water gets flushed down the sink drain! However, there are instances where pet fur or human hair, scum buildup, or other materials get stuck in the drain pipes. This often results in a clog and an annoying overflowing sink. If you’re experiencing backups when washing your hands or hassles when you brush your teeth, it’s probably time to seek a solution.

Clogged drains are a part of life—luckily, bathroom sink clogs are easy to address and even easier to prevent in the future. But to get there, we’ll first need to understand what causes bathroom drain clogs in the first place!

How to Unclog a Bathroom Sink

Why is My Bathroom Sink Always Clogging?

Knowing the common causes of bathroom sink clogging is essential to preventing future problems. Here are the main culprits that causes a clogged bathroom sink:

» Clumps of Hair

Hair is the single most common culprit of drain clogs in the bathroom. As you may already know, hair clumps together when wet. Over time, continuous hair accumulation results in a large hair clump mixed with soap scum and other debris, which causes draining water to move slowly.

» Soap Scum

Soap scum is not only a nuisance because it can clog your drain. It is also nasty and unhealthy as it often plays host to bacteria. Like oil and grease, bar soap has a habit of re-solidifying in your drains and accumulating on the walls of pipes over time.

» Something Stuck in P-trap

If you’ve ever dropped anything valuable down the drain, you’ve likely been thankful for the P-trap – the bent pipe that catches water and prevents toxic sewer gasses from coming into your home. However, while the P-trap is an invaluable feature, it’s also the source of many bathroom sink clogs. Because of the P-trap’s shape, foreign objects can easily get stuck in the bend, creating a barrier for proper drainage.

» Mineral Buildup

Mineral deposits can collect along pipe walls if your home has hard water, which contains a large amount of naturally occurring minerals. It would be best if you considered installing a water softener system to deal with these hard water issues.

How to Unclog Your Bathroom Sink

If you need to do a quick DIY drain clear, you need to know a few quick and straightforward methods to unclog your bathroom sink. These methods should also work on other clogged drains, such as kitchen sinks or bathtubs.

» Remove The Clog By Hand

One of the things parents dread is hearing their child say: “The water’s not going down the drain!”

Before doing anything else, use a flashlight and have a good look inside the drain. Sometimes, a clog is immediately visible near the surface and easily accessible. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and extract the clog as best you can.

» Use a Sink Plunger

Did you know that there are specially-made plungers for unclogging sink drains? Instead of containing a flange on the end, sink plungers have a wider mouth to be more effective at sink clearing.

If you have a sink plunger, place it over the drain and use it just as you would when plunging a toilet. Using a plunger may cause the clogs to back up from the drain, so be prepared to clean the mess after plunging.

» Use Boiling Water

Often, you can get rid of a clogged kitchen sink with one or two good blasts of boiling water. This method works best to dislodge clogs caused by soap scum, but the sink shouldn’t be already full of standing water.

All you need to do is follow these three simple steps:

  • Step 1: Boil water in a large pot on your stove
  • Step 2: Carefully pour the water down the drain to break up the clog.
  • Step 3: Test the drain and repeat as necessary

» Unclog Your Sink with a Drain Snake

You can purchase drain snakes or “plumber’s snakes” at your local hardware store. These handy tools can do everything: clogged bathroom sinks, shower drains, toilets, and kitchen sinks!

To use a drain snake, simply turn the crank at one end to rotate the wire as it moves through your drain pipe. The drain snake can shred through denser obstacles, such as soap scum and mineral deposits, to enable the flow. You can also get it snagged on obstructions such as hair, then pull it back out of your drain.

As the auger rotates, it flails against the pipe’s interior walls, scraping off hard minerals, soap scum, and oil.

» Use a Natural Drain Cleaner

Conventional drain cleaners don’t usually work as well as they claim to and are often full of harmful chemicals. The baking soda and vinegar method is a tried and true method of clearing drain clogs, and you likely already have all you need in your kitchen cabinets. All you need to do is pour a cup of baking soda into the drain, immediately followed by a cup of vinegar. Rinse with boiling water after about an hour and repeat as necessary.

» Call a Local Plumbing Expert

When the above methods to unclog bathroom sink drains don’t seem to work, you are probably dealing with a clog that is too tough for your everyday tools and cleaners. When all fails, quit searching for a “bathroom sink plumber near me” and call the local, licensed experts at Conejo Valley Home Services Plumbing & Rooter for professional drain cleaning services.

Tips on How to Prevent Bathroom Sink Clogs

Prevention is better than cure. Knowing how to prevent clogged sinks will save you time, money, and hassle in the future. Here are our top tips to prevent bathroom sink clogs and keep them clean:

  • Install sink strainers to catch hair, fur, and soap particles and keep them from entering your drains. Remember to clean these regularly.
  • Every couple of weeks, plug up your sink, fill it with hot water, then allow it to drain. The volume of the water will do an excellent job of flushing the drain line. Run hot water down your shower drain at the end of each shower.
  • Use a natural drain cleaner once a month on each sink to maintain your drains
  • If your bathroom sink is draining slowly, pour boiling water down the drain. This will help clear any developing clogs, especially in the bathroom, where soap can solidify.
  • Dental floss, feminine hygiene products, and other household waste should go in the trash, not your sinks and toilets!

The Bottom Line

You can help prevent future clogs and headaches by taking time to maintain your drains. A little bit of work goes a long way! Hopefully, with these preventative measures, you can put your days of recurring drain clogs behind you!

Owen was my electric tech,
and from the conversation over a couple of electrical issues here, I understood quickly that Owen knows the line of work very well: educated, smart, polite, with down the the earth professional demineur... He checked the wiring, and explained the possibilities why my appliance keeps tripping the breaker..
Thank you Owen.
The company has a right set up. They would also remind you about the appointment, and would convinietly call you a few minutes ahead.

They have the right codes... they won't walk in their shoes on your floors either...
I strongly recommend the Conejo company for your electrical issues...

When our 31 year-old furnace suddenly stopped working, they were out within 24 hours of my call. It was a quick and easy replacement part, but something we wouldn’t dare do ourselves. It’s good to know we’ve found a reliable repair service!

This company really stands behind its work. I have the platinum maintenance for my both HVAC and plumbing, both installed by them and it really pays off. The plumbing area, especially, led by Andrew Dilger and team are honest, thorough, skilled and offer options from minimal to full overhaul with pro’s and cons and short vs. long-term financial differentials of each approach. I have an older home with pipes at end of their 60 year shelf-life and it’s a new area for me. It’s really great to be able to trust a company when the product isn’t visible, but buried in the ground. I liked Derek who identified a potential issue during normal maintenance and the oversight of Andrew confirming it and best approach. I think it’s the honest approach set by senior management, including Andrew, Ralph and others. And highly professional! Kudos!

We were on Conejo’s maintenance plan for a while. We found they were very thorough in checking our A/C, plumbing and electric systems. It is worth considering these plans.

We had other work done where we felt the pricing was quite high, like for a garbage disposal and for installing a tankless hot water heater. So consumers should be sure to do price comparisons.

When they put in our tankless hot water heater, there were a couple of code violations that needed to be corrected, plus we had some questions about the costs. But when our concerns finally reached the Customer Service managers, their response was excellent and all our concerns were immediately and satisfactorily resolved.

I strongly suggest getting cost estimates from other companies before hiring Conejo. I was provided an estimate of $7149 to perform what turned out to be 7 hours of work by two (relatively low paid) employees and a couple hours to use specialty equipment to pinpoint failure point. I had a blockage in my home sewer system caused by root intrusion. By using their tool inserted into the sewer pipe they said the blockage was 8 feet deep and under my concrete entryway walkway and would therefore take two workmen 2 to 3 days to complete the repairs. I questioned that pricing since it seemed too high and was provided a reduction of $850 to $6299. That still seemed like a high price but I needed to get the work done quickly so I accepted the bid. (My big mistake.) I monitored the work when their two workmen came to make the repairs. I am retired from SoCalGas so have some knowledge about excavating and fixing damaged pipe. The sewer pipe was only 3 feet deep, not 8 feet deep. The work involved digging and exposing the 4-inch plastic sewer pipe and then cutting out a 3-foot section and installing new pipe, then backfilling the excavation (which was done poorly – was not well compacted – I did this after they left as best I could. I hope my entryway sidewalk doesn’t fail/crack in the future.) They completed the work in 7 hours. I then contacted Conejo and asked to them to reconsider the price since the basis of the estimate was incorrect. I eventually spoke with their plumbing manager, Nick, who said he would speak with the person who developed the estimate and get back to me. Nick never got back to me even though I called their offices twice and texted Nick. The next contact I had from Conejo was a revised bill reducing the charge by $500, leaving me with a bill of $5799. On the positive side, the people I spoke with in their billing and/or scheduling department with friendly and responsive.

Outstanding Service from Alfredo at Conejo Valley Heating and AC

We’ve had ongoing AC issues for a couple of years, and after trying other companies, we finally found the solution with Alfredo from Conejo Valley Heating and AC. The level of professionalism and quality of work Alfredo delivered was unparalleled.

From the moment he arrived, Alfredo impressed us with his attention to detail—respecting our home by wearing booties and carefully assessing the situation. He identified the root cause of our AC problems, taking his time and staying late into the afternoon, even after a long, busy day. As the last appointment of the day, Alfredo made sure our AC was fully repaired before leaving.

A home inspection was done for the sale of our home and the inspector flagged our furnace as not having a furnace door switch and being a potential fire hazard. Parker arrived to open the furnace door to find that the switch had a piece of black tape over it to protect it, he removed said tape, job done. Unreal. Thanks Parker.

Gave us an estimate and we decided to wait a few months before booking. I called when we were ready to book, but the person they directed us to never called us back!

We ended up choosing another local plumber who charged half what CVHAPR quoted us. I'm so glad we got a second opinion.
